Social Media is all about people and getting social. The most important metrics we consider over there is number of followers or subscribers or connections. Whatever term you may use depending on the social media channel or the platform, but this number holds a lot of importance in our mind and on sheets! In reality, though the most important metrics should be the ‘Engagement Rate’. In order to get a good engagement rate over time, you need to pay close attention to the types of social media followers you have acquired.
It is really very important to lookout for what is the ratio of each kind of follower, and make sure you eliminate the unwanted ones unless and until you just wish to show-off the numbers!
So, here is the ultimate list of five type of audience personas you can divide your follower base into.

These type of followers are interested in the content you create or post everyday. They wait for your posts and videos. They are willing to share your content with their connections, as they strongly believe in your abilities. When they have any problem related to your niche, they come for a guidance to you. Loyal followers are your gems, literally your loving family on whom you can depend on to spread your message and also get an aid in early engagement.
As the name suggests, you are deliberately engaging them. All the accounts which are posting on similar niche as yours, having a set of their own followers – they can become your engaged followers. It’s always a give and take relationship, you engage with them, you support them – they support you. They might not sometimes believe in your thoughts and might have contradicting theories. It’s good to have discussions and brainstorming with such people.
These type of followers are very beneficial for your account growth. Following them, supporting and commenting on their posts not only builds good relation with the thought leaders, but gives you more visibility in their circle. So it’s a great source of getting their followers follow you. And remember these followers are the one who are actually interested in the similar niche what you are posting about.
While you are collaborating with other accounts, make sure you are honest and have real intentions to participate in the collaboration. Always try to give more than you take. It will come back to you in one form or other. Do not engage in Follow-Unfollow game, it not only reduces your credibility and account trust factor, but also it spoils a good relation that was probable in the future.
These type of social media users are not so frequent on social media. But they have interest in your content. Whenever they login and see your content, they like your post or video, and if the content provokes their interest or curiosity, they may post a comment as well. Someday, if they feel like communicating, they might even DM you. But you cannot always depend on them for engagement.
These type of followers are also very important. There is a good chance that either they will become your customers in future, whenever the need arises or if they get more active in future, they will start engaging more and convert into loyal followers.
You need to always encourage these kind of followers to be more active on the platform and stay connected. They need a little push.
These kind of followers, we all can understand and must be having. I will explain with an example. It’s like good old Tom decides to be active on Twitter one day, and follows you. Likes all your tweets. Retweets a couple of them. Super active that day!
But then on the very next day, he loses interest as he remembers he loves to watch his favorite sports channel on telly more than Twitter. Now you have this follower, but you don’t know when again the spike of his interest will bring him back on the platform.
He just was using the platform as a means to entertain and fulfil his momentary spike, of being social.
Sometimes another scenario might happen – someone who was actively following you undergo a spiritual transformation and is now on infinite social detox. Well, now they are your follower, but in reality, they are not following what you post!
These kind of followers are not much useful. Because they are not going to see or interact with that content until they see it. It usually hampers your engagement rate. But still you can wait for them. For some time. For some months. Hoping they will turn up one day!

These are the followers who never engaged with your account. Ever!
Plus they have 0 or minimal posts. You need to get rid ? of these followers. Most of the times they are bots too. Sometimes, your competitors or someone observing you might create such account, follow you and just scroll your posts – never like, share, or comment or save. No engagement at all.
Their views adds up to reach. And then the platform thinks, the post was shown to this account, but the post must be a low quality because the account did not interact. Which actually is not true! They deliberately didn’t interact.

According to me, it is always important to have good followers around, whom you are providing value through your content. Loyal and engaged followers help you create more useful and engaging content and grow on that particular social platform.
As a business or personal brand, you should always focus on building good quality content providing value or entertaining your social media audience. Selling or promotional posts can be occasional. Social media is to establish connections. It’s really important with whom we connect. So pay attention to your content and the kind of audience you are attracting and retaining.
